Alnus glutinosa, commonly known as Common Alder or European Alder, is a deciduous tree native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. It typically grows to heights of 20-30 meters with a conical to pyramidal crown. The leaves are alternate, elliptic to obovate, dark green above and paler beneath, turning yellow in the fall. Inconspicuous male and female catkins appear in early spring before the leaves. Female catkins develop into cone-like structures that persist through winter. Common Alder is valued for its rapid growth, tolerance of wet soils, and ability to fix nitrogen. It is often planted for erosion control, reforestation, or as a windbreak. The bark is grayish-brown and smooth when young, becoming deeply fissured with age.

Planting
- Choose a location with moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
- Loosen the soil in the planting area.
- Carefully remove the tree from its container or burlap wrap, taking care not to damage the roots.
- Place the tree in the center of the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots.
Care
- Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
- Prune to maintain shape.
- Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer.

Delivery
We offer free delivery on all orders but the method and timeline for delivery varies according to the size of plants ordered:

Smaller Trees and Hedging Stock (up to 5 litre pots):
are dispatched twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, using DX for next-day delivery. Once your order is scheduled for dispatch, you will receive a notification confirming the delivery date. -
Larger Trees (above 5 litre pots) require special handling and we arrange a two-man delivery service to ensure your order arrives safely. Once your delivery is scheduled, you will receive a notification with the expected delivery date.

Please note, larger trees are available for delivery from late October onwards, but where stock is shown as available you can place your order now to secure stock.
